The Nubble Lighthouse
The “Nubble”is located on a small island off the coast of Cape Neddick, about two miles north of the entrance to the York River and York Harbor. In 1876 Congress set aside $15,000 for the building of the 41-foot tall, cast iron lighthouse. In 1879 the lighthouse was first illuminated. Over 100 years later, the light was automated in 1987, saying farewell to its last innkeeper.
Today, the lighthouse is visited by hundreds of thousands of people yearly and the most popular event is the lighting of the Nubble. This event occurs twice a year in December and July, where the entire lighthouse is outlined in white lights for a truly break taking sight to see. Please visit our Events page to see when the next lighting will occur.
